Course Overview
The Integrative Approach to Veterinary Oncology course is designed for the veterinarians wishing to integrate Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) and other integrative medicine for their cancer patients. The course teaches an evidence informed approach to integrative veterinary oncology. This course discusses the use of acupuncture, herbs, nutrition and nutraceuticals and reviews the etiology of cancer from a TCVM perspective. This course is taught by two board certified veterinary oncologists with extensive experience in the combination of TCVM and conventional therapy, and a senior Chi faculty and clinician with a TCVM Master's degree.
The course will also review common cancer and treatment protocols in general as well as include a deeper look into the mechanisms of action of anticancer herbs as well as evidence to support safety and efficacy of an integrative approach. Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
- Combine herbal medicine with conventional cancer treatments
- Integrate nutrition, food therapy and dietary supplements with cancer care
- Understand the TCVM approach to treating tumors, melanoma, and more

Instructors
Kendra Pope
DVM, DACVIM (Oncology), CVA, CVCH, CVFT, CVTP
Dr. Pope earned her DVM at the University of Florida. While in veterinary school, she began her training in holistic therapies at Chi University for Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, and completed certifications in veterinary acupuncture, Chinese herbal therapy, veterinary food therapy and Tui-na prior to graduation. Dr. Pope went on to complete a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Pennsylvania in 2012, which was followed by a three-year residency in medical oncology at the University of Pennsylvania. She successfully obtained board certification in her specialty of oncology and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2015.
Betsy Hershey
DVM, DACVIM (Oncology), CVA
Dr. Hershey received her DVM from the University of Minnesota in 1996. She then completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Pennsylvania in 1997 and a 3 year residency in medical oncology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2000. She became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, subspecialty of Oncology in 2001. Dr. Hershey worked for Arizona Veterinary Specialists in Gilbert, AZ for 3 years before opening Integrative Veterinary Oncology in Phoenix, AZ in 2005. Dr. Hershey received certification in veterinary acupuncture in 2006 from Chi. Dr. Hershey has won numerous awards for her research on inhalation chemotherapy and vaccine sarcomas in cats and has authored and co-authored multiple publications, including several book chapters.
Michael Bartholomew
DVM, CVA, MSTCVM, CVCH, CVFT, CVTP
Dr. Michael Bartholomew earned his DVM from the University of Illinois in 2001. Between 2005 and 2009 he earned certifications in Veterinary Acupuncture, Tui-na, Food Therapy and Chinese Herbal Medicine from Chi University. He then went on to earn an Master of Science in TCVM from Chi 2016. He is currently an integrative practitioner at The Animal Hospital of Dunedin in beautiful Dunedin, Florida, and incorporates TCVM into his practice on a daily basis. He has treated pets across the United States and from around the world, including locations as far as Turkey, France, England and even Hong Kong. He has been published in several magazines, including Dog Fancy's Natural Dog and Dogs Naturally, and is the co-author of several chapters in Xie's Veterinary Herbology. Dr. Bartholomew also lectures on a regular basis, as he has been a lab assistant at Chi University since 2008 and became a formal MS program faculty member in 2016.
